BioMessageOn="Raul achievements during his career."
BioMessageSend="
Bio:

Raul Lopez began his career with the Juventut Badalona Junior team. In 1997-98 Raul played both with the Juventut Junior team and the Festina Juventut (LEB), the Badalona associated team. In 1998-99 he made his debut in the ACB League with Juventut Badalona and played there also in 1999-00. The following season, 2000-01, he was signed by Real Madrid (Spain) and has played there since.

Raul was selected in the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft, #24 over all, by the Utah Jazz. Raul was a member of the Spanish Junior National Team that won the 1998 Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Mannheim, the 1998 European Junior Championship and the 1999 World Junior Championship. Last summer he helped the Spanish NT win Bronze at the 2001 European Championship in Turkey. He was a 1995-96 Spanish Cadet Champion and he also played the 2000-01 ACB League All-Star Game.
"

AboutMessageOn="A little bit of information about Raul Lopez."
AboutMessageSend="
About:

Raul the 22 year old man from Vic (Barcelona), has been nicknamed the \"Spanish Fly\" by his American fans, because of the affect he seems to have on his female fans. Dribbling the basketball was always one of his great passions as a youth. He would practice dribbling the ball for hours just for fun which has made him very deadly with the ball in his hands. He rarely shows off his dribbling talents to outsiders and would rather save public exhibitions for the games.

Raul's game resembles Terrell Brandon's game so much it is scary. They have the exact same demeanor on and off the court. They play the game the same way and they are the exact same size. Raul loves to lead his team to victory but does not wish to be the one scoring the points. He would much rather score no points and have all his team mates score 20 points each.
"

PosMessageOn="What Raul really does well on the basketball court."
PosMessageSend="
Positives:

Raul is very quick and uses his quickness on defense to come up with a lot of steals playing the passing lanes. On the offensive end, he can use his quickness to free himself for a shot or blow by his man. He has an extremely quick release. The ball can be on the way before the defender realizes he is shooting.

Raul is a strong dribbler with both hands and will beat his man going left as often as he will going right. With his combination of quickness and great dribbling ability, he is able to make scoring opportunities for his teammates. He can practically get in the lane at will. As for speed with the ball, he can take the ball from baseline to baseline as fast as anyone.

Raul's court vision is exceptional. He sees passing lanes being created, as well as where open men are going to be even before they are open. He is a very unselfish player and loves to make great passes for dunks. He can be a very good shooter when he squares up and his range is excellent, easily NBA 3 ability.
"

MinMessageOn="What Raul struggles with on the basketball court."
MinMessageSend="
Minuses:

One of Raul's biggest weaknesses is shot selection. Raul has yet to figure out what is and is not a good shot. He has the ability to hit very hard shots which will sometimes get his team in trouble. For example, he may take a bad shot that his team is not in position for the rebound or to get back on defense.

Size is another of Raul's weaknesses. At barely 6 feet tall and only 158 pounds, he needs to get stronger and this will help him out immensely. A playing weight of about 170 - 175 pounds would allow him to keep his quickness and not allow taller guards to overpower him and help him finish better at the basket. He still needs to learn to shoot off rhythm when he goes to the hoop to help keep shot-blockers off balance.

Turnovers can be a problem for Raul because he is a pass first guard. Defensive players know this and are reluctant to commit. Defenders like to show then return to their man. Raul will pass on the show and this can lead to turnovers. Finally, he needs to slow down. He is so quick and has such good vision that he sometimes overruns plays by getting the ball there too early or not letting a player get free before he passes them the ball.
"

NewsMessageOn="The latest news out of Spain about Raul."
NewsMessageSend="
News:

Negotiations Bring Lopez Closer to Jazz (7/4/02)
Spain's Real Madrid basketball club will lower its demands for compensation and allow point guard Raul Lopez to join the Jazz this summer, according to club official Emiliano Rodriguez.

\"We cannot clip Raul's wings, and we cannot cut off his dreams,\" Rodriguez told the Spanish sports daily Marca. \"The club will negotiate his escape clause with flexibility, so that he can move on to the NBA.\"

The Spanish EFE news agency quoted Rodriguez saying negotiations \"can be considered done.\"

Former coach and general manager Sergio Scariolo was recently fired. Scariolo publicly had taken a hard-line stance regarding Lopez's release, and Rodriguez expressed the club's willingness to drop its asking price.
According to Marca, Real Madrid initially refused to let him go for less than $3.9 million but is now considering an initial payment of $1.5 million, financed by Lopez's agents, plus an additional $1 million to be paid by Lopez over the next few years. NBA bylaws allow the Jazz to contribute no more than $350,000 to Real Madrid.

Jazz vice president Kevin O'Connor said his team is \"not a participant\" in the negotiations for Lopez, the club's first-round draft choice in 2001. \"Until he has a letter of clearance, we sit on the sidelines on this,\" he said.
-- Chad Nielsen/Special to The Tribune

Original Story
"
